I designed an illustrated patient journey booklet for a clinical trial investigating a treatment for Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). As the condition can be deeply personal and is often misunderstood, the booklet needed to communicate complex medical information while helping patients feel supported, represented and understood throughout their treatment journey.
My objective was to create a resource that balanced clinical accuracy with empathy. It was particularly important that the illustrations reflected the people most affected by the condition, with authentic representation of women of colour, while presenting information in a clear, approachable and reassuring way.
I developed a warm, illustration-led visual identity using a soft colour palette, inclusive characters and simple iconography to guide patients through each stage of the trial. Every design decision was made with the patient experience in mind, reducing the clinical feel of the booklet while maintaining accuracy and clarity. The layouts were carefully structured to break down complex information into manageable sections, helping patients feel informed without becoming overwhelmed.
The booklet was exceptionally well-received by both the client and patient participants. Feedback highlighted that the illustrations and representation helped participants feel seen, understood and reflected in the materials, with many commenting on how relatable and reassuring the booklet felt. The project demonstrated the impact that thoughtful, inclusive design can have on patient engagement, while strengthening my skills in user-centred design, illustration and communicating sensitive information with empathy.
